Have to also add www.tapitwater.com to the socially conscious geo-location app list. Tap water access made easy! Great work by an American org. Looking forward to their Canadian launch soon.

There's an app called iMatter that encourages kids to tag pollution problems or solutions in their communities, log actions they are taking to make a difference and connect with each other.

The app isn't fully baked, but it's a great concept.

Re: number one, I totally agree! EARN, the CA-based nonprofit I work for, helps low-income workers save money to invest in assets, including small businesses. I've been thinking of how cool it would be for an app to link CA residents up with our Savers' businesses and reward them for being regular patrons!

Great trend piece from Rob Reed. As digital practitioners, this is very exciting technology, but I'm wondering about our nonprofit world and end audiences who may just now be starting to dabble with social media as lurkers and information consumers. Will they be an audience who is ready for mobile and geolocation technologies? Would we be talking to just a very small minority? Would love to hear what others think about this.

Cool article, but some of the featured apps are closer to early Beta efforts that verge on consumer scams than a "positive force for good."

Check out itunes user reviews for DeHood, for example.

A thought provoking post. The only thing I would add at the moment is the possibility of organizations creating maps to push out points of interest to users (if they opted in to receive), which I think would be a great use of geolocation. A historical walking tour (which can be recent history as much as older history) being the lowest hanging fruit.
