Hi Beth - an interesting post, but you don't seem to answer the question in the title. I appreciate the overview of SNA and tools but am left wondering about your thoughts on the title question - does having a map of your (or your company's) social network help in your social media strategy?

Do you have a subsequent post about this (I'll look after I post this comment but thought I'd ask anyway)?

Hi Beth,

Great to see the word spread about using social network analysis to further the cause of NPOs. At FirstGiving we've taken the analysis in a somewhat different direction by analyzing the relationships between the NPO, fundraiser, and donor. Eventually the goal is to incorporate the beneficiary of the NPO's efforts into the social graph as well.

By creating a visual representation of the flow of charitable donations and their impact within a network model, we can work to optimize the network to improve it's overall efficiency; more donations from more people for more worthy causes.

Greta post, thank you for your thoughts. Have you run into any tools that allow you to visually map your LinkedIn network?
Cheers,
Joel

Hi Beth

Great post- and good selection of tools.I can really recommend NodeXL to anyone wanting to experiment with this sort of data.

However, it is just a start. Analysing a small network (with say 5,000 nodes and 200k edges) can give you weeks of fun, as you discover clusters, clumps and other things. So I'd recommend readers start with something smaller and more manageable.

So timely and thoroughly researched, Beth.

Thank you, this is a great resource for anyone who wants to be effective advancing their efforts on the social web.

One tool I you might find a good compliment to the others on your list is Mentionmap:

http://apps.asterisq.com/mentionmap/#user-kanter

Mentionmap creates a dynamic chart that connects users by their mention of usernames and hashtags. It's fascinating in its ability to chart indirect connections among users and topics, and surf from user to user.

Looking forward to your book's launch event!

Excellent ideas as always - just sent a link this post on your blog to the people I know in the Wash. DC offices of the National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA). The nonprofit I am affiliated with is a Friends group that supports a local National Wildlife Refuge. NWRA is our *parent* organization which supports Refuges by connecting with members of congress and supporting legislation which supports all Nat'l Wildlife Refuges.

This is not an advertisement for them!! I just wanted you to know how useful your Networked Nonprofit concepts are for a wide variety of nonprofits!

I tweet as @mimimuircastle which is the name of my Second Life avatar who also loves wildlife refuges :)
